Remember having troubles with usb drives not booting. I don’t have this laptop with me at the moment but can suggest the following.

Format the USB drive using gparted or other disk partitioner.
Use Startup disk creator in Ubuntu

sudo usb-creator-gtk

and write the ISO image to usb
Try booting.

1. connect phone to computer using the data cable
2. remove the SD card and insert it into a card slot in the computer or use a card reader

Either way, you should see it as a removable device. Then it is just a matter of creating the new folder using file manager/explorer.
